In beautiful Blackburn, the modified ‘clinker brick’ home needed to expand to accomodate the young family within. The best location for the additions was to the front of the property. The challenge was to retain the grandure of the Clinker’s history by sympathetically siting, forming and materialising the additions. The result is a two-storey addition with office, lounge, master suite and study zones for bedrooms created by incorporating the existing verandah and extending to the front of the site.
Original clinker bricks were salvaged from the demolition of the external stair to form the front hit&miss façade, garden beds and book-end elements. Energy efficiency was increased to the entire dwelling with additional insulation throughout and to the new structure by bedding the floor level below the natural ground level.
